Why Is Ireti Kingibe Nyesom Wike FCT Loans Trending?

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is making national headlines after accusing FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of executing multi-billion naira loan acquisitions for the territory without getting mandatory approval from the Senate.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Political Paradigm, Senator Kingibe stated that she audited records from the Debt Management Office (DMO) covering borrowings taken between August 2023 and March 2026.

She highlighted several key points:

  • Lack of Legislative Oversight: Kingibe asserted that while the annual FCT budget goes through legislative checks, she has never seen Minister Wike appear before the Senate to defend or seek formal approval for public loans.

  • Challenge to Produce Records: The lawmaker challenged anyone disputing her allegations to produce official Senate Votes and Proceedings showing where loan approvals were presented and debated.

  • Comparison to Presidential Authority: She noted that even President Bola Tinubu routinely sends borrowing requests to the National Assembly, arguing that a minister exercising delegated presidential power cannot bypass the legislature.
