Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, is generating major discussions across Nigerian media after warning parents that university students are quietly acquiring NELFUND student loans without parental knowledge.
Speaking on student funding dynamics, Oyedele explained that because the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) application portal relies strictly on direct digital verification using a student’s National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), and JAMB registration details, parents are completely bypassed during the approval process.
The revelation sparked widespread debate among educators, policy analysts, and parents:
- Parental Consent Concerns: Many parents expressed anxiety regarding legal obligations, fear of undisclosed debt accumulation, and lack of transparency within households.
- Student Autonomy & Accessibility: Policy defenders highlighted that removing parental consent requirements protects students from disadvantaged backgrounds whose parents might otherwise refuse to co-sign or support higher education.
