Why Is Tony Elumelu Trending?

Billionaire industrialist and Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, Tony Elumelu, is dominating social media conversations and corporate news outlets following a viral video from a UBA Graduate Management Accelerated Programme event.

The viral clip captures an interactive session where a newly graduated female trainee greeted the chairman with a cheerful "Good morning, Tony." Elumelu, visibly surprised by the informal address, initially double-checked the greeting before politely setting boundaries on workplace etiquette.

He instructed her to address him as "Mr. Elumelu" or by his popular initials "TOE", jokingly adding, "You won't call me Tony, or Chairman. I don't subscribe to that kind of... Oyinbo life, okay?"

The video sparked widespread online debate regarding corporate hierarchy, age-appropriate deference, and modern workplace culture in Nigeria.

While some commentators argued that corporate branding and Western "first-name policies" permit informal greetings, many industry professionals defended Elumelu, noting that professional boundaries and respect for senior executive leadership remain essential standards.
