Former Arsenal defender and club legend Martin Keown has urged manager Mikel Arteta to reinforce the right-back position during the current transfer window to maintain tactical stability ahead of the new season.
Keown shared his assessment while speaking to Hayters TV in the buildup to Arsenal’s FA Community Shield fixture against Manchester City at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
Reflecting on the squad's tactical evolution, Keown noted that while earlier concerns centered around the central striker role, Kai Havertz's performances during pre-season have established a solid foundation up front.
However, he pinpointed the right side of the defense as a potential vulnerability, citing injury record concerns surrounding Ben White and uncertainty regarding Jurrien Timber's full recovery.
While acknowledging that Cristhian Mosquera provides versatile coverage across the defensive line, Keown maintained that securing a dedicated right-back could prove essential for Arsenal's ambition to sustain high-level performance across domestic and European competitions.
"Right-back could be a problem if Jurrien Timber’s not going to be ready because obviously Ben White’s had a few injuries... So, that might be something they are looking at, to bring a right-back in." — Martin Keown, Arsenal Legend
