Vandals have systematically dismantled and stolen no fewer than 168 solar-powered streetlights along the five-kilometer Longbridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, returning the critical interstate route to complete darkness at night.
The solar streetlights, which were installed in 2025 to improve nighttime visibility and deter criminal attacks on stranded motorists, have been progressively removed over recent months.
A field investigation revealed that vandals carefully unbolted and dismantled entire poles and lighting units, leaving stretches of up to 300 meters stripped of public infrastructure.
Motorists and local business operators in Wawa and OPIC have expressed deep concern over the development, emphasizing that the absence of lighting exposes road users to heightened risks of armed robbery, kidnappings, and vehicular accidents.
The Longbridge axis has long been notorious for criminal attacks targeting drivers whose vehicles break down, making the removal of lighting infrastructure a major safety hazard for thousands of daily commuters.
Responding to the situation, the Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Richard Adeleye, and Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that several suspected vandals caught in the act have been arrested and charged to court.
Authorities assured the public that joint monitoring strategies are being deployed alongside security agencies to protect critical public infrastructure, while urging residents to report suspicious nocturnal activity along the expressway.
