The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised an alarm over an alleged plan by security agencies to arrest its National Secretary and former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, just days ahead of Saturday's governorship election in Osun State.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party warned that any politically motivated arrest of a key leader would heighten tensions and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
The ADC urged the Federal Government and security agencies to exercise restraint, noting that lawful invitation procedures should be followed if any agency has legitimate grounds to question Aregbesola.
The allegation surfaces amidst a massive security deployment across Osun State designed to forestall electoral violence and guarantee a crisis-free poll on Saturday.
Following recent clashes and political violence that reportedly claimed lives in areas like Ilesa, heavy security contingents—comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and Civil Defence (NSCDC)—have established a security blanket over hotspot locations in Osogbo and surrounding towns.
Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has deployed DIG Ishyaku Mohammed to lead operations, warning that political thugs and troublemakers will face strict enforcement.
Concurrently, election preparations have entered the final stage with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) preparing to distribute sensitive materials. Following a Federal High Court judgment, INEC confirmed the addition of Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Dr. Francis Olugbenga Ajala to the official ballot, bringing the total number of contesting political parties to 15. Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke declared Friday a public holiday across the state to enable civil servants to travel to their respective constituencies to vote.
