The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has swiftly backtracked on initial media reports suggesting that the Federal Government has officially approved replacing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) iconic khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric.
Appearing on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Olawande initially highlighted plans to integrate local textile traditions like Adire into the scheme to stimulate Nigeria's domestic garment manufacturers.
However, following immediate public pushback and widespread speculation across digital platforms, the minister issued a formal clarification via his official communication channels.
He noted that while fabrics like Adire and Ankara are actively being discussed as a means to project national pride, no final executive decision has been made regarding a replacement design.
The government is currently evaluating multiple uniform variants that adequately satisfy strict requirements for professional outlook, durability, economic cost-effectiveness, and institutional identity.
"For the avoidance of doubt, yes, I mentioned Adire during the discussion. I also mentioned Ankara. My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations. It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved," Minister Olawande clarified.
Beyond the uniform deliberations, the newly approved Federal Executive Council (FEC) structural reform package represents the first comprehensive legislative overhaul of the NYSC scheme since its initial establishment under military decree in 1973. Under the fresh structural framework, corps members will no longer face random institutional postings.
Instead, deployments will be explicitly tied to individual academic qualifications and a rigorous profiling process conducted directly during orientation camp.
Additionally, the Ministry is reviewing its deployment policies to enhance internal security, prioritizing postings within geopolitical zones that corps members are intimately familiar with, while safely maintaining the military's supportive role in securing camp operations nationwide.
