Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs targeting C$27.6 billion ($19.94 billion) worth of United States goods in response to new duties imposed by Washington.
Effective September 8, the counter-tariffs will apply duties ranging from 15% to 50% across more than 700 American products, matching the U.S. measures dollar-for-dollar after bilateral trade talks broke down.
To cushion the domestic economy, the Canadian government unveiled a C$7.5 billion financial support package aimed at protecting small businesses, maintaining corporate cash flows, and assisting workers impacted by the dispute.
High-tier 50% tariffs will target sectors such as steel, aluminum, furniture, and apparel, while lower tiers apply to electronics, tools, appliances, and seafood.
"Our dollar-for-dollar, rate-for-rate counter-tariffs as well as a multi-billion dollar support package will protect workers, farmers, families, and businesses." — François-Philippe Champagne, Canadian Finance Minister
