Nigeria has called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to take joint action against South Africa by bringing ongoing xenophobic attacks against African migrants before the African Union (AU).
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Lungi, Sierra Leone, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the recent wave of "Afrophobic" violence targeting Nigerian citizens and other African nationals.
The Nigerian government disclosed that it has already evacuated 1,490 citizens across seven batches following widespread looting, physical assaults, and fatalities.

President Tinubu reminded South African authorities that their current national freedom was built on the historical sacrifices and liberation efforts of nations like Nigeria, warning that continued targeting of foreign workers and business owners is unacceptable.
"ECOWAS should present this matter before the next meeting of the Authority of the African Union to send a clear message that this type of behavior is unacceptable. South Africa should be reminded that its freedom was built on the liberation efforts of African countries like Nigeria."
The diplomatic push aligns with recent statements from Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), who urged the Federal Government to take legal action before the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.
Beyond the diplomatic row, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the newly unveiled ECOWAS Compact for Regional Integration, democratic governance, and the establishment of an ECOWAS Counter-Terrorism Force.
