The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of 48 assets linked to the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
Delivering the judgment, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that Malami, along with members of his family and other claimants, failed to counter the reasonable suspicion that the assets were acquired through unlawful activities during his tenure under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The ruling comes after an initial interim forfeiture order granted on January 16 by Justice Emeka Nwite, which covered 57 assets estimated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to be worth approximately N212.8 billion.
While the court permanently seized 48 of those properties under Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, Justice Abdulmalik vacated the interim order on the remaining nine assets, returning them to the claimants.
Beyond the asset forfeiture, the former justice minister faces deeper legal jeopardy. Malami, his wife Hajia Bashir Asabe, and his son Abdulaziz Malami are currently being prosecuted by the EFCC on a 16-count charge of money laundering, involving the alleged concealment of N8.7 billion in illicit proceeds.
In a separate case before Justice Abdulmalik, the former AGF and his son are also accused of illegal possession of firearms and live ammunition without a license.
