Why is Yoon Suk Yeol Trending?

South Korea’s ousted former President, Yoon Suk Yeol, is dominating international headlines after a Seoul court handed him a staggering 30-year prison sentence for orchestrating an illegal, covert drone infiltration into North Korea.

The unprecedented judicial ruling is trending globally because prosecutors successfully proved that Yoon abused his presidential power to deliberately "manufacture" a severe national security crisis.

The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of abuse of authority and general treason (benefiting the enemy). The judges ruled that Yoon secretly ordered military drone flights over Pyongyang in October 2024 to drop propaganda leaflets, intentionally provoking the nuclear-armed North Korean regime into an aggressive stance.

This fabricated wartime environment was then used as a calculated pretext to justify his disastrous, short-lived declaration of emergency martial law on December 3, 2024.

The verdict has triggered intense discussion on global political timelines.

The court sharply rebuked the former leader, stating that he used South Korea's military capabilities for private political gain rather than national defense.

Yoon, who is already in detention appealing a separate life sentence for leading the December 2024 insurrection, denied wrongdoing, with his legal team claiming the drone flights were a legitimate response to North Korea's trash-balloon provocations.
