The political atmosphere in Rivers State has reached a fever pitch following the high-stakes defection of the House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his rapid consolidation of the state's APC gubernatorial ticket.
The topic is trending intensely because Chinda's crossover has triggered a monumental legal and constitutional crisis.
Chinda—a fierce, long-time ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike—was officially announced by the Speaker of the House as having defected to the APC, leading Chinda to resign his position as Minority Leader.
This move came right on the heels of a massive structural shift in Rivers State, where major party figures—including Governor Siminalayi Fubara—withdrew from the APC primary race, allowing Chinda to sweep the primary with 268,497 votes as the sole contender.

However, the development has sparked immediate, fierce blowback. Prominent legal scholar and human rights advocate Chidi Odinkalu has publicly slammed Chinda’s maneuvering, labeling his cross-party dual alignment as "organized crime" against the electorate.
Concurrently, the Association of Legislative Lawyers of Nigeria (ALDRAP) has launched a sweeping lawsuit against Chinda and 27 other defecting Rivers lawmakers.
The legal challenge seeks to completely nullify his actions and declare his seat vacant, arguing that shifting allegiances while holding a mandate violate the anti-defection provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
