Severe tension and mass anxiety gripped multiple communities across Osun State on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, as widespread, unverified social media reports alleging the infiltration of armed bandits disrupted normal academic activities.
The security scare forced numerous public and private primary and secondary schools to abruptly shut down operations before midday.
Terrified parents and guardians stormed school premises in large numbers to withdraw their wards following wild rumours that suspected kidnappers were targeting institutions in Ila, Ifelodun (Ikirun), Odo Otin, Boripe, Olorunda, and the state capital, Osogbo.
Investigations revealed that the panic was heavily fueled by a false report originating from the Ila Orangun axis, which claimed a schoolgirl had been abducted at Faaje village along Oyan Road.

Security intelligence later discovered the insinuation was completely manufactured, as the student in question had simply gone into hiding to avoid attending school.
However, coming on the heels of recent real-world school abductions in neighboring Oyo State—which triggered a nationwide solidarity rally by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on the exact same day—local residents were visibly highly sensitive to any potential security threats.
Reacting swiftly to the breakdown of order, the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, issued a robust public statement through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, urging the populace to completely ignore the claims, which he tagged a malicious "false alarm" engineered by opposition elements to destabilize the state.
Governor Adeleke reassured citizens that a comprehensive, proactive security strategy drafted by the Ministry of Education and joint tactical forces is already being implemented.
