A Manchester Crown Court has sentenced two young men to a combined total of 24 years and five months’ imprisonment for their criminal roles in a catastrophic high-speed road crash that claimed the life of a UK-based Nigerian professional, Sylvester Abayomi.
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed on Monday, June 1, 2026, that 20-year-old Uways Hussain was handed an 11-year and eight-month prison term as the driver, while his accomplice, 23-year-old Usmon Mahmood, received 12 years and nine months behind bars.
Legal analysts note that Mahmood’s heavy sentence marks a historic landmark case in United Kingdom jurisprudence, serving as one of the first successful convictions of a passenger for actively aiding and abetting death by dangerous driving.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 4:36 a.m. in March 2026 at the junction of Green End Road and Kingsway in South Manchester.
Investigations revealed that the deceased, Sylvester Abayomi, was safely driving to work and entered the intersection on a green light when his vehicle was violently T-boned by Mahmood’s Volkswagen Golf, driven by Hussain, which blasted through a red light at an astonishing 139 mph.
Recovered mobile phone footage showed the reckless duo filming themselves driving at speeds exceeding 130 mph in 30 mph residential zones while casually inhaling nitrous oxide balloons.
Following the collision, the pair attempted to flee the scene and report the vehicle as stolen, completely unaware that an automatic emergency alert triggered by Hussain's Apple Watch was recording their incriminating conversations.
GMP tracking units apprehended both suspects within 12 minutes of the initial impact.
