United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday celebrated a massive conservative judicial victory after the US Supreme Court issued a definitive ruling upholding state laws that bar transgender female athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports teams within public schools and collegiate institutions.
The milestone legal decision delivers a sweeping victory to right-wing strategists and state legislators in one of the country's most fiercely contested social and cultural battles.
In a 6-3 decision split cleanly along ideological lines, the conservative-dominated high court held that the US Constitution does not prevent individual states from enforcing legislative measures restricting sports participation based on biological sex.
While the justices remained sharply divided on whether such bans conflict with Title IX—the landmark federal civil rights law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational programs—the final ruling immediately validates restrictive statutes already enacted across at least 27 states, including West Virginia and Idaho.

Writing the majority opinion, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh emphasized that local legislatures and educational boards possess the specialized institutional capacity to assess scientific considerations and draw administrative lines.
The legal battle initially escalated from Idaho's 2020 Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, where Idaho Solicitor General Alan Hurst argued during January hearings that biological metrics such as muscle mass and lung capacity make sex the definitive factor in sports.
Although transgender students and civil rights groups argued that the bans violate equal protection guarantees, this ruling mirrors previous high court actions, including last year's decision upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, cementing the court's willingness to side with conservative state mandates.
