The Federal High Court of Nigeria has officially issued the Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions, 2026, introducing a revamped regulatory framework designed to guarantee the speedy, efficient, and transparent determination of political disputes across the federation.
The new structural guidelines aim to significantly minimize institutional delays and streamline judicial proceedings ahead of upcoming national and sub-national electoral cycles.
According to an official press statement released on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, by the Director of Information of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Dr. Catherine Oby Christopher, the comprehensive rules received executive approval from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John Terhemba Tsoho.
The judicial guidelines are structurally engineered to reinforce the handling of complex pre-election lawsuits in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the statutory provisions of the newly enacted Electoral Act, 2026, and other extant legal instruments.
"The Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions, 2026, have formally repealed the 2022 Practice Directions, making the new rules the applicable framework for the conduct of pre-election cases before the court," the judicial statement confirmed.
By completely revoking the previous 2022 judicial framework, the court has established an expedited timetable for filings, hearings, and judgments, aimed at preventing technical bottlenecks that often clog the appellate system.
The court management strongly urged members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), political parties, independent litigants, and public stakeholders to immediately obtain and familiarize themselves with the statutory provisions of the new practice directions to ensure seamless legal operations across all regional divisions.
