The Atlas Lions of Morocco booked their historic spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands in a tense, high-stakes penalty shoot-out following a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico.
The North African powerhouse edged past the highly rated Dutch side 3-2 on penalties, setting up a blockbuster knockout phase showdown against Canada on Saturday.
The match exploded into life in the 72nd minute when Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock, finishing off a brilliant counter-attack engineered by Crysencio Summerville to give the Netherlands the lead.
Gakpo's celebration was deeply emotional, with the 27-year-old wiping away tears just days after he and his partner Noa van der Bij announced the tragic loss of their unborn son.
However, Morocco refused to submit, launching an aggressive late offensive that paid dividends in the 90th minute when a pinpoint cross found defender Issa Diop, who powered a brilliant header into the corner of the net to send the stadium into extra time.

The stunning elimination has piled immense regulatory pressure on Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman, whose tactical decision to switch to a defensive back five effectively surrendered midfield possession to Mohamed Ouahbi's dominant Moroccan side.
Despite scoring 10 goals during a rampant group stage campaign—including a 5-1 thrashing of Sweden—the Dutch squad becomes the second elite European heavyweight to exit the tournament on penalties within a few hours, following Germany's shock shootout loss to Paraguay, prolonging the Netherlands' agonizing historical wait for World Cup glory.
