Veteran Nigerian rapper and singer, Oludemilade Martin Alejo, popularly known by his stage name YCee, has raised a major alarm over how contemporary social media algorithms are negatively shifting the landscape of the domestic music industry.
Speaking during an exclusive live interview with Naija FM in Lagos, the Jagaban crooner asserted that the unrestricted freedom given by video-sharing platforms like TikTok allows users to scale rapidly without traditional artist grooming, directly diluting the overall quality of talent in the industry.
The highly respected lyricist lamented that the uncontrollable craze for online virality has completely altered how major record labels seek and sign new musical acts.
According to YCee, modern music executives backed by massive funding and institutional power have largely abandoned the tedious process of scouting for deep, raw artistic talent.
Instead, they are aggressively chasing trending internet figures, creating an influx of what he categorized as "half-baked musicians" and mere "accident artists" into mainstream entertainment circles.
"Platforms like TikTok have made it easier for a lot of people to do music to the extent that even someone who is not an artist would start posing as an artist once they do a sound and it goes viral," YCee remarked. "Sadly, music executives with power and funding are now chasing virality."
YCee pointed directly to social media-engineered fame as the primary factor responsible for the severe lack of lyrical depth, conceptual longevity, and authentic substance observed in mainstream music over recent years.
While acknowledging that these digital platforms democratize entry for independent creators, he warned that sacrificing artistry for short-lived viral clicks ruins the structural foundation of Nigerian music.
He urged major stakeholders to rebalance their business models by investing in artists with genuine vocal, technical, and creative longevity.
