The Borno State Police Command has intercepted a major drug trafficking consignment comprising 55 large sacks filled with 60ml bottles of a highly dangerous, illicit liquid substance popularly known on the streets as “Gumm.”
The multi-million naira contraband cargo was stopped by eagle-eyed security forces while it was actively being transported toward Nigeria's international borders with neighbouring countries in the Lake Chad basin.
In an official public statement released on Saturday, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, disclosed that the breakthrough was achieved on June 26, 2026, at approximately 7:11 p.m.
Operatives belonging to the Command’s elite X-Squad, acting on precise, actionable intelligence, set up a tactical checkpoint and successfully intercepted an Isuzu Bedford pick-up vehicle moving along the high-traffic Baga Road Bypass axis in Maiduguri.
A rigorous search of the vehicle’s trunk exposed the massive cache of concealed chemical substances.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the illicit substances were being conveyed to Ngamboru Ngala Local Government Area, with the intention of smuggling them across international borders," ASP Nahum Daso confirmed.
During the swift border-corridor operation, police operatives arrested the driver of the vehicle, identified as 51-year-old Babagana Modu.
Under interrogation, the suspect confessed to detectives that he had been formally contracted by a commercial syndicate to transport the heavy consignment to its final international border destination.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, reiterated the command’s unyielding commitment to dismantling drug distribution networks, confirming that active tracking is underway to arrest all fleeing accomplices linked to the illegal trade.
