The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), alongside the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles, and Senior Clergy, have strongly rejected statements made by United States President Donald Trump regarding the security situation in Nigeria.
Speaking at an event in Washington, D.C., President Trump claimed that strategic American military interventions and targeted airstrikes within Nigeria had successfully brought an end to the brutal slaughter and hacking of massive Christian populations by radical insurgents and extremist groups.
Reacting sharply to the claim in separate interviews on Saturday, Nigerian clerical leaders characterized the US President's assertions as misleading, false, highly politicized, and entirely detached from the daily realities on the ground.
The Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern States, Joseph Hayab, argued that Trump is operating on highly distorted briefings from political advisers who fail to comprehend the complex, ongoing security challenges across the West African nation.
Hayab emphasized that both Christians and Muslims are still falling victim to frequent mass abductions and lethal attacks across states like Oyo, Kwara, Kogi, Katsina, and Borno.
"The right people who should tell whether Trump has succeeded should be Nigerian Christians or Northern Christians, not Trump himself. Probably he is getting his information from the wrong source," Northern CAN Chairman Joseph Hayab stated.
The Christian leaders pointed out that while US forces did execute brief, targeted operations against active ISIS and bandit commanders in Sokoto and other northern frontiers over recent months, these strikes have not yielded a permanent cessation of violence.
International Secretary of the Ecumenical Synods, Archbishop Osazee William, noted that the clerical body has yet to see convincing physical evidence that the foreign military strikes have solved the root causes of domestic insecurity.
The apex bodies urged the Washington administration to prioritize genuine, practical defense partnerships and actionable intelligence sharing over media propaganda geared towards scoring local political points.
