Prominent social activist Aisha Yesufu has publicly detailed her reasons for turning down a direct offer to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking as a guest lecturer at a public lecture centered on citizens’ participation in governance at Veritas University in Abuja, Yesufu disclosed that her outright rejection of the legislative ticket was rooted in her staunch refusal to validate a corrupt internal system that sought to compromise democratic transparency.
She revealed that about 20 competent aspirants had already gone through the rigorous process of purchasing nomination forms for that specific seat, making any backdoor arrangement highly unethical.
Yesufu stated that accepting the ticket under such manipulative circumstances would have been an act of extreme injustice to the other political aspirants who had invested heavy financial resources, time, and personal efforts into pursuing the position through legal channels.
She described the party's top-down arrangement as unfair and criminal, stressing that she would never participate in structural irregularities even if the final outcome promised to yield immense personal and political benefits to her career.
"The reason I didn’t take it was because of the process. There were about 20 competent people from whom money had been collected during the process who would be shortchanged," Aisha Yesufu stated during the university lecture.
"The process was unjust; in my view, it was criminal. If we claim to be guided by the law, then why should we do something unjust?"
The vocal activist further emphasized that she harbors absolutely no fear of losing an election through a transparent process, noting that she would much rather stand in solidarity with ordinary citizens than acquire elite political titles, power, and state honors through crooked avenues.
Reaffirming her lifelong commitment to systemic transparency, Yesufu used the academic platform to challenge young Nigerians across the country to become aggressively involved in mainstream political architecture.
She concluded by advising the youth that meaningful political participation must extend far beyond merely casting ballots on election days, urging them to actively police the internal processes of political parties.
