The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has executed a massive public destruction exercise in Benin City, Edo State, setting ablaze a staggering 73,463.21 kilogrammes of confiscated narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances with an estimated street value of N2.8 billion.
The high-profile enforcement exercise, which took place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, represents a major blow to regional drug syndicates. A analytical breakdown of the incinerated contraband revealed that Cannabis Sativa formed the overwhelming bulk of the haul, accounting for 73,210.23 kilogrammes.
The remaining items purged from the agency’s evidence vaults included 246.36 kilogrammes of psychotropic pharmaceuticals—specifically Tramadol, Diazepam, and Codeine cough syrup—alongside 2.66 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, 3.74 kilogrammes of cocaine, and 0.22 kilogrammes of pure heroin.
In an official address delivered on behalf of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), by the Director of Operations and General Investigation, Suleiman Ningi, the agency reaffirmed its absolute resolve to dismantle transnational trafficking networks.

Issuing an uncompromising eviction notice, the Governor warned that drug cartels must immediately exit the state or face total asset forfeiture and prosecution.
Furthermore, Senator Joseph Ikpea (Edo Central) pledged robust federal legislative advocacy to scale up funding, equipment, and welfare packages for the anti-narcotics agency.
Reflecting on the dangerous nature of their field duties, the Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, revealed that his operatives have frequently come under heavy gunfire from armed criminals while intercepting drugs disguised in unusual locations like local shrines, urging parents to remain deeply vigilant against substance abuse among the youth.
