The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially launched a comprehensive criminal investigation into a self-acclaimed cleric, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known within religious circles as "Prophet Sunday Koboko."
The anti-graft agency intercepted the suspect following shocking petitions alleging that he systematically defrauded members of his local ministry of a staggering sum totaling ₦70.39 million through highly manipulative spiritual schemes.
According to a formal statement posted on the EFCC’s official X handle, Ajuluchukwucheya specialized in extracting huge cash payments from vulnerable church members by offering bogus promises of miraculous financial breakthroughs, divine investments, and specialized spiritual interventions.
A primary petitioner, Okey Uwakwe, detailed how the suspect extracted ₦6.23 million from him under the guise of executing "spiritual works" to convince his overseas-based brother to return to Nigeria, alongside an additional ₦3.25 million to cure a relative’s 15-year battle with infertility.
“He asked me to do what they tagged ‘holy ghost thunder’, believing it was going to solve my problems. I bought it, and after all the payments, nothing happened, and my problems persisted,” an aggrieved member of the ministry told EFCC operatives.
The fraud reached an astonishing peak when the self-styled prophet announced to his congregation that he had won a massive ₦33 billion international lottery, urging members to contribute matching funds to unlock their shares of the multi-billion Naira dividends.
Trusting his word, Uwakwe pumped an extra ₦3.35 million into the lottery scam and ₦500,000 into a fraudulent "₦1 billion rice-processing business," losing a personal total of ₦13.33 million.
EFCC investigators revealed that once Uwakwe blew the whistle, multiple other victims stepped forward to recount similar exploitation.
The suspect reportedly operated a highly commercialized spiritual bazaar, selling bogus high-priced items labeled as "holy ghost thunder," "miracle stickers," and "spiritual dragons" to congregants searching for prosperity.
The commission confirmed that the total verified fraud footprint has hit ₦70.39 million, adding that the suspect will be formally arraigned before the Federal High Court as soon as the active evidence-gathering phase is fully wrapped up.
