Organic Resilience & Fiscal Accountability: Dr. Yunusa Tanko Clarifies Obidient Movement Structure, Affirms Peter Obi’s Campaign Spend Integrity
The operational dynamics of contemporary Nigerian political movements are experiencing a major transition as grassroots networks institutionalize their command structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While critics and state-backed entities frequently attempt to project structural cracks within decentralised citizen blocks, frontline mobilizers are relying heavily on public transparency and comprehensive financial audits to solidify their collective base.
This defensive political strategy aims to protect opposition vanguard organizations from structural subversion while maintaining an unyielding focus on electoral reforms.
According to a live interview on Arise News Daybreak, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement and former presidential campaign spokesperson, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has firmly dismissed rumors of persistent internal divisions or leadership factions within the movement.
Responding to allegations raised over the weekend by alternative coordinators regarding a disconnect between leadership and the grassroots, Tanko maintained that the block remains heavily unified and issue-driven.
He revealed that prior to September 2024, the Obidient Movement operated as a loose, ambiguous alliance, but has now successfully transitioned into an organized national framework spanning all 37 states, governed by a 43-member National Executive Council, and boasting over one million registered members.
Addressing the sensitive issue of financial accountability from the 2023 electoral cycle—specifically concerning crowdfunding contributions and unpaid polling agents—Dr. Tanko asserted that Mr. Peter Obi remains the only presidential candidate in Nigeria's political history to fully account for his campaign spending.
He explained that Obi had independently hired external auditors who presented a line-by-line public document detailing every single kobo spent, challenging rival coalitions to match that standard of transparency.
Clarifying the claims of unpaid agents, Tanko explained that under Obi’s strict fiscal rules, personnel are strictly paid based on measurable results and verified data, rather than being given funds for political patronage or unverified deployments.
The national coordinator also used the platform to vehemently condemn the recent Federal High Court ruling ordering the deregistration of five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
Labeling the judgment a deliberate attempt to put the nation's democratic system into jeopardy barely months before elections, Tanko declared that "an injury to one is an injury to all".
He noted that the true objective of the ruling class was to completely erase alternative options like Peter Obi from the ballot paper.
Tanko expressed immense gratitude that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former Governor Seriake Dickson, exists as a solid institutional vehicle to absorb affected opposition members, urging all intellectuals and youth alliances to mobilize at their local polling units to reclaim the country.
