Diplomatic Continuity & Macroeconomic Defense: Reno Omokri Clarifies Mexican Envoy Status, Slams Opposition Claims Over Living Costs

While alternative political figures point to rising food costs, electricity tariffs, and lingering regional insecurity as signs of systemic failure, state representatives rely heavily on institutional statistics and macroeconomic rebounds to demonstrate long-term viability.
This communicative tug-of-war highlights the widening gap between state-level economic indicators and the immediate physical realities of the populace.
According to a contentious live interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the newly appointed Ambassador-Designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, strongly dismissed rumors that the United Mexican States had rejected his diplomatic credentials.
Clarifying his delayed resumption of duty while other envoys have taken office, Omokri explained that Mexico is currently heavily preoccupied with co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, which has temporarily slowed down routine diplomatic inductions.
He insisted that the vast majority of recently appointed Nigerian ambassadors are in the exact same situation and attributed the negative narratives to typical opposition propaganda.
Responding to concerns raised by host Seun Okinbaloye regarding a record methamphetamine bust by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) involving Mexican nationals in Nigeria, Omokri strongly warned against framing a 50-year diplomatic relationship on isolated acts of individual criminality.
He emphasized that Mexico remains one of Nigeria's most respectful international allies, hosting over 50,000 Nigerians without institutional discrimination.
The envoy-designate pointed out that Nigeria maintains a solid $40 million trade surplus with Mexico and urged the nation to look past the "one bad apple" incident to instead study how Mexico successfully leveraged the USMCA trade pact to build a $2 trillion economy.
The interview took a sharp political turn when the anchor presented former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent critique that ordinary Nigerians are not feeling the impact of President Bola Tinubu's administration amid soaring inflation.
Omokri fiercely fired back, stating he deals strictly in facts rather than speculation.
He cited several achievements, noting that for the first time in history, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has not gone on a national strike for three consecutive years.
He added that state allocations via the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) tripled from ₦700 billion in March 2022 to ₦2.1 trillion in March 2026, ensuring every single state can consistently pay civil servant salaries.
Defending the administration against accusations of merely "glorifying statistics," Omokri maintained that the current inflation rate is technically lower than the figures inherited on May 29, 2023.
He argued that global inflation has hit major economies like the US and UK due to Middle Eastern geopolitical conflicts, yet Tinubu’s "futuristic planning" successfully prevented the fuel availability crises seen in neighboring African nations.
Omokri concluded by highlighting that Nigeria's stock market value grew from ₦27 trillion to ₦156 trillion, while food import dependency plummeted from $10 billion to $2.3 billion annually, proving that the administration's structural reforms are actively steering the country toward stability.
