Democratic Stability: Think Tank Chief Reflects on Progress and Urges Review of Security Frameworks
Nigeria's continuous democratic journey has reached a significant milestone, prompting critical national assessments regarding institutional stability, economic transformations, and the safety of the populace.
While political analysts celebrate the total absence of military intervention since 1999, the stark realities of grassroots hardship present a contrasting picture. Strategic thinkers are now pushing for structured avenues to ensure that civil feedback actively dictates fiscal planning and structural security policies.
According to Arise News online, the Director General of the Nigerian Thoughts Project (TNTP), Dr. O’diakpor Obire, stated that while Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance is a remarkable achievement, a massive gap remains between leaders and citizens.
Obire defended the current administration’s audacious economic reforms, arguing that the repositioning is designed to stabilize the country's financial future despite causing immediate inflation and public suffering.
He urged citizens to look past current sentiments, noting that structural economic corrections take significant time to mature before trickling down effectively to the masses.
However, the discussion quickly turned volatile over the government’s apparent failure to tackle unrelenting national insecurity, especially following a high-profile mass abduction in Oyo State. Obire admitted that the spread of terror into the South West is deeply heartbreaking and conceded that the military and police must drastically ramp up operational responsibility.
He emphasized that the time has come to completely reassess "Operation Safe Corridor"—the controversial terrorist rehabilitation program initiated by the previous administration—as it is not enshrined in the constitution and shows zero effectiveness in halting the spread of banditry.
Concluding his address, the think tank boss introduced the "Letters to Nigerian Leaders" initiative, a civic platform designed to seamlessly gather and amplify direct human input from local communities into national budgetary frameworks.
He reiterated that a secure state cannot exist when citizens are left to provide their own defense while schools and hospitals face constant harassment. Obire called for immediate, actionable security policies over mere political talk, insisting that true democratic advancement requires both public and private sectors to sit at a common table of civic dialogue.
