United States President Donald Trump has sparked intense global conversation by publicly signaling his absolute willingness to hold direct talks with Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te.
The controversial statement marks a massive departure from decades of established American diplomatic etiquette and risks severely escalating economic and military friction between Washington and Beijing.
The United States and Taiwanese presidencies have purposely avoided formal, direct communication channels since 1979.

While addressing defense correspondents at Joint Base Andrews, President Trump responded bluntly to queries regarding a controversial, multi-billion-dollar US-approved arms transfer intended for Taiwan’s self-defense forces.
Despite the known geopolitical sensitivities, Trump stated clearly that he would speak directly to the Taiwanese leader to find an amicable resolution.
