Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a 63-year-old Chinese grandmother, Ting Hung Kiong, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos for allegedly attempting to smuggle 31 kilograms of "Canadian Loud"—a highly potent synthetic strain of cannabis—into Nigeria.
The suspect, a Chinese national who naturalized as a Malaysian citizen, was caught at the Terminal 2 Arrival Hall upon landing via an Emirates Airline flight originating from Thailand by way of Dubai.
According to official statements from NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy Femi Babafemi, Kiong traveled from Malaysia to Thailand before routing her journey to West Africa through the United Arab Emirates.
Security personnel discovered the massive contraband consignment meticulously packed within two large travel suitcases. During initial profiling and interrogation, the suspect claimed she works as a caregiver in Malaysia and that her daughter had funded her cross-continental itinerary.
Kiong disclosed that she spent two weeks in Thailand before an airport contact handed her the illicit freight for delivery in Nigeria.
In an even larger anti-narcotics operation at the MMIA import shed, the NDLEA recovered 1,825,710 tablets of Tapentadol 250mg, a controlled opioid shipment with an estimated street value of over N2.19 billion.
The consignment arrived from India aboard an Emirates Cargo flight and had been under strict multi-agency surveillance before being officially transferred to the NDLEA by the Nigeria Customs Service.
The agency’s aviation commands recorded additional enforcement triumphs during the week.
At the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, operatives placed arriving passenger Onyeka Valentine Emeka under diagnostic observation following his flight from Sierra Leone via Addis Ababa, leading him to excrete 185.36 grams of ingested cocaine.
Meanwhile, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, a 29-year-old building engineer identified as Babatunde Prosper Afekhide was arrested while attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Milan, Italy, with 10,280 pills of Tramadol and Tapentadol wrapped in aluminum foil within a concealed luggage carton.
