The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has declared that Africa lacks any moral or logical justification for its lingering structural poverty, considering its massive human potential and untapped natural resources.
Delivering a keynote address at an international policy dialogue in Cape Town, South Africa—organized under the Spier Dialogue Event with the theme “Policies for Growth in Africa”—the former Anambra State governor stated that the continent's socioeconomic struggles are entirely down to a toxic blend of defective leadership, institutional corruption, and astronomical costs of governance.
Obi emphasized that Africa holds more than 60 percent of the world’s uncultivated arable land, vast mineral reserves, and the youngest demographic profile globally.
He argued that these attributes should naturally position the continent as a frontrunner among global economic blocs, rather than transforming into developmental burdens due to bad governance.

Raising alarm over declining corporate life spans, fragile small and medium scale enterprises, and dismal social indicators—including low life expectancy and high infant mortality—the NDC standard-bearer aggressively urged African heads of state to look past the permanent distractions of political maneuvering and endless election cycles.
Instead, Obi maintained that sustainable prosperity hinges completely on a deliberate paradigm shift toward human capital development, prioritizing intensive funding for public healthcare, high-quality education, local productivity, and systemic poverty eradication.
