The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued an emergency public health alert over the circulation of adulterated and artificially enhanced palm oil across major markets in the state.
The warning is part of a broader regulatory sweep aimed at protecting unsuspecting residents from consuming substandard, chemical-laden food products brought into the market by unscrupulous traders looking to maximize profits at the risk of public health.
The administrative warning was officially made public in a media statement published on Thursday via the Lagos State Government’s authorized X digital handle.
According to the General Manager of LASCOPA, Afolabi Solebo, the discovery followed a series of persistent consumer complaints and aggressive market surveillance operations carried out by agency enforcement teams.

In a direct response to the verified threats, LASCOPA enforcement units successfully tracked down and sealed a commercial retail outlet caught distributing the contaminated oil.
The shop, located along Idutafa Lane, off Oluwa Street near the Amodu Tijani Oluwa Mosque on Lagos Island, was completely shut down to prevent further distribution of the dangerous products.
"Adulterated palm oil may contain harmful substances such as candle wax, chemicals, dyes, and impurities which cannot be digested by the body and are capable of causing serious health complications, including food poisoning, stomach disorders, tissue and liver damage, and other long-term health risks," Solebo stated during the enforcement exercise.
The agency boss urged citizens to carefully inspect palm oil before buying by checking for unusual color, offensive odors, excessive thickness, or abnormal sediments at the bottom of containers.
Traders and local distributors involved in the illicit adulteration of food products have been warned to desist immediately or face severe judicial prosecution and heavy financial fines in accordance with the consumer protection laws of Lagos State.
