Rival bandit groups operating in Zamfara State have tragically executed an abducted local government councilor and a director over allegations of selective monthly financial alignment with the Lakurawa terrorist network.
The victims, identified as Habibu Jangebe, the elected councilor representing Jangebe Ward, and Alhaji Jamilu Sani, the Director of Planning for the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area, were brutally murdered after being intercepted by the criminal elements on May 18, 2026, while traveling to the local council headquarters to finalize logistics for their upcoming religious pilgrimage.
Local community sources claimed the victims were used as administrative conduits by the local council to deliver monthly protection fees to the Lakurawa group to safeguard communities from attacks—a financial gesture that was completely excluded from the local bandit networks.
Enraged by this perceived exclusion from the "welfare package," the bandits kidnapped the officials and subsequently killed them, while issuing direct death threats to the Local Government Chairman, Yahaya Yari.

Reacting to the gruesome killings, Chairman Yari dismissed the funding allegations as malicious fabrications spread by criminal informants.
He emphasized that the local administration, in alignment with Governor Dauda Lawal's strict anti-negotiation policy, does not fund any terror cells.
Yari clarified that the only external group receiving financial and logistical support from the council is the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) brought in from Borno State to assist the Department of State Services (DSS) and military units in flushing out all armed bandits from the region.
