Law and Order Collapse Fears in Durban as Acting Minister Vows Arrests Over Xenophobic Attacks
South Africa’s Acting Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia, has issued a stern warning to perpetrators of xenophobic violence following a wave of attacks targeting Ghanaian nationals and other foreign residents in Durban.
The unrest has reached a critical point, forcing the Durban Central Concerned Business Group to announce a total shutdown of the CBD after businesses were intimidated and law enforcement failed to guarantee safety.
The diplomatic fallout has already begun, with Ghana summoning South Africa’s envoy after reports of legal residents being harassed and told to "fix their own country."
Minister Cachalia emphasized on Friday, April 24, that such actions stand in direct opposition to South Africa’s constitutional values.
"Acts of xenophobia, looting, or intimidation will not be tolerated. Police have been instructed to act decisively," Cachalia stated, as the South African Police Service (SAPS) moves to stabilize the escalating crisis.
