Zonal Leaders Move to Stabilize PDP as Anyanwu’s Expulsion Threatens Leadership Vacuum
The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reached a tipping point as the party's zonal chairmen signal their readiness to take control of the National Working Committee (NWC).
This move follows the legal battle surrounding the expulsion of National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the potential nullification of the March 30, 2026, convention.
Confiding in Sunday Punch, several zonal leaders revealed a plan to invoke the "Doctrine of Necessity."
Should the courts uphold Anyanwu’s expulsion and void recent conventions, the zonal chairmen intend to appoint an acting National Chairman and National Secretary from among their ranks to prevent a total collapse of the party's administrative structure.
"It is high time we put a final stop to all these crises. The zonal chairmen are part of the NWC and we have the mandate to stabilise the party," one leader stated.
However, the North-East Zonal Chairman, Babangida Maddibo, urged caution, advising members to wait for the Supreme Court's final ruling before taking drastic action.
The tension underscores a deep rift between factions supported by high-profile figures, including the struggle for control over the party's future ahead of 2027.
