FG Releases New Trade Prohibitions; Bans Imported Paracetamol and Essential Medicines
In a major move to protect domestic industries and conserve foreign exchange, the Federal Government of Nigeria has released an updated import prohibition list.
Effective April 1, 2026, the directive from the Federal Ministry of Finance strictly bars the entry of 17 major categories of goods, including common life-saving medications.
The ban heavily impacts the pharmaceutical sector, with products such as paracetamol (tablets and syrups), metronidazole, folic acid, aspirin, and multivitamin capsules now restricted to local manufacturers.
Other notable items on the prohibited list include:
Food Staples: Frozen poultry, pork, beef, and bird eggs (excluding hatching eggs for research).
Consumer Goods: Soaps, detergents, tomato paste, and bottled water (over 150ml).
Industrial Items: Bagged cement, NPK 15:15:15 fertilizers, and corrugated iron sheets.
Cocoa Products: Cocoa butter, powder, and chocolate bars exceeding 2kg.
The Nigeria Customs Service has been directed to begin immediate enforcement. Businesses are advised to adjust their procurement strategies to avoid seizure of goods and legal penalties.
