Labour Party Vice Chairman Claims National Leadership Secured 2023 Ticket for Peter Obi
The National Vice Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Ceekay Igara, has dismissed the narrative that Peter Obi was the sole architect of the party's 2023 success.
Speaking on Arise News on Monday, April 20, 2026, Igara insisted that while Obi contributed to the party's visibility, he inherited a robust political structure already established by the leadership.
In a surprising revelation, Igara made it known that Obi was not initially a popular choice within the party.
He claimed the national leadership had to engage in a "complex administrative process," which included persuading other aspirants to step down to allow the former governor to emerge as the flagbearer.
“The true test of political influence will be whether the momentum of 2023 can be replicated in the ADC without the established Labour Party machinery,” Igara challenged.
Following Obi’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Igara fired back at the "Obidient" movement’s claims of independence.
He questioned why that support did not translate into governorship victories in states neighboring Obi’s home base.
He concluded that the LP is currently "retooling" and remains a major force rooted in its own constitution, unaffected by individual defections as they eye the 2027 general elections.
