14 Passengers Including JAMB Candidates Kidnapped in Benue State Bus Attack

Benue Links bus kidnapping along Makurdi-Otukpo road involving JAMB candidates

Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening as gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, intercepted a Benue Links bus and kidnapped 14 passengers.

The victims were reportedly traveling from Makurdi to Otukpo, with many of them being young students intending to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

The attack occurred around 8:00 p.m. on April 15, 2026. According to local sources, only the driver and one passenger managed to escape the ambush.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed that security forces have been mobilized to track the kidnappers and rescue the students.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, who is personally leading the rescue operation, noted that the bus was operating outside official hours.

“Benue Links, as a policy, does not operate at night. From what we gathered, operations had closed, but the driver... picked passengers along the road,” the Commissioner explained.

Police tactical teams are currently combing the bushes in the Otukpo area to secure the release of the 14 victims.
