EFCC Issues Urgent Public Alert Over Impersonation Scams and Fake Anti-Graft Raids
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned Nigerians to be vigilant following a surge in criminal activities involving individuals posing as anti-graft officers.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the commission revealed that gangs are now using "ingenious but fraudulent means" to extort money from unsuspecting citizens, particularly youths.
The EFCC detailed a specific modus operandi where criminals in fake uniforms ambush individuals leaving popular eateries and fun spots.
These victims are often accused of being internet fraudsters and are moved to "fictitious locations" that resemble EFCC offices to be dispossessed of their valuables.
The EFCC also highlighted three other major threats:
Motorist Harassment: Criminals targeting drivers based on their number plates to extort cash.
Fake Content Creators: Individuals staging videos of forced entries and broken windows to simulate EFCC raids for social media clout.
Online Impersonators: Scammers using fake IDs to solicit bribes or sensitive information.
The agency urged the public to evaluate such claims carefully and reminded Nigerians that the commission operates under strict standard procedures.
