Brighton & Hove Albion dealt a massive blow to Liverpool’s Champions League qualification hopes on Saturday, securing a 2-1 win at the Amex Stadium.

The star of the show was 35-year-old Danny Welbeck, whose two-goal heroics moved him to the top of the English goalscoring charts for this Premier League season.

Liverpool, still buzzing from their midweek 4-0 thrashing of Galatasaray, appeared sluggish without key stars Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker.

Their troubles deepened early in the match when top scorer Hugo Ekitike was forced off with an injury.

Welbeck opened the scoring in the 14th minute, nodding home from close range.

Although Milos Kerkez equalized for the Reds following a Lewis Dunk error, Welbeck struck again in the 56th minute to seal the three points.

“The 35-year-old former Manchester United and Arsenal forward is enjoying his highest-scoring season in the league,” reports confirmed, as Welbeck reached 11 goals for the campaign.

The defeat leaves Arne Slot’s side fifth in the table, just one point ahead of Chelsea and two behind Aston Villa.
