A series of tragic road accidents along major highways in Ogun State has claimed the lives of five people, including a woman who had just returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom.
The fatal incidents, which occurred between Monday evening and early Tuesday morning, March 24, 2026, have once again raised alarms over nighttime travel and excessive speeding.
The first disaster took place at approximately 11:16 p.m. on the Ijebu-Ode/Ore Expressway.
According to Afolabi Odunsi, spokesperson for the Ogun State FRSC, a Toyota Hiace bus rammed into a stationary Julius Berger truck after the truck's towing chain snapped, leaving it stranded on the dark highway.
All four occupants of the bus—two men and two women—died instantly.
In a separate but equally heartrending incident near Christopher University on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a UK returnee lost her life while traveling to a wedding in Abeokuta.
As reported by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the Toyota Camry she was in rammed into a moving truck at high speed.
“The driver was on excessive speed and rammed into a moving truck. The deceased and another female occupant had just returned from the UK to attend a wedding before the tragic incident,” TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed.
While two other passengers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Redeemed Hospital, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.
Authorities have used these tragedies to issue a stern warning to motorists to adhere to speed limits and ensure towing equipment meets safety standards to prevent further loss of life.
