The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a formal apology to Nigerians for the persistent power outages that have crippled businesses and households across the country during the current dry season.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the Minister attributed the blackouts to severe gas supply shortages.
Adelabu explained that generation companies (GenCos) are struggling to secure gas due to massive outstanding debts owed to suppliers.
He warned that the ongoing volatility in the Middle East could further strain global energy markets, indirectly impacting Nigeria's domestic supply.
To resolve the liquidity and supply constraints, the Minister advocated for a shift toward renewable energy.
“I want to apologise to Nigerians for this temporary issue leading to hardship. It is not our wish, but it is due to factors beyond our control. We are looking at scaling up renewable energy solutions, particularly off-grid systems, to reduce dependence on gas,” Adelabu stated.
The press conference also touched on Adelabu’s political future.
With President Bola Tinubu setting a March 31 deadline for federal appointees with 2027 political ambitions to resign, speculation has mounted that Adelabu will vie for the Oyo State governorship.
While he did not confirm his candidacy, the Minister noted he still has a few days to decide, emphasizing his commitment to service at "either the national or subnational level."
