Trump Issues 48-Hour Deadline to Iran as Middle East Conflict Escalates
US President Donald Trump has issued a chilling 48-hour ultimatum to Tehran, vowing to "hit and obliterate" Iran’s energy infrastructure if the strategic Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened to global shipping.
The threat, posted on Truth Social, sets a deadline of 23:44 GMT on Monday, March 23, 2026.
This dramatic escalation comes as the "2026 Iran War," which began on February 28, enters a perilous new phase following a massive Iranian missile barrage on southern Israel.
According to reports from AFP and The Guardian, the ultimatum landed just hours after two Iranian missiles struck the Israeli towns of Arad and Dimona—the latter being home to Israel’s sensitive nuclear research facility.
The strikes injured over 100 people, including a 10-year-old boy left in serious condition.
While Israel’s "Iron Dome" and other defense systems have been active, the military confirmed a "direct hit" on residential buildings, prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to vow retaliation "on all fronts."
The Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for 20% of the world’s oil, remains effectively closed by Iranian forces.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran is only restricting vessels from countries involved in attacks against Iran.
However, the standoff has already pushed North Sea Brent crude prices above $105 per barrel.
In response to Trump's threat, the Iranian army warned it would target US energy and desalination plants across the region if its own power stations are touched.
