Fast-rising Afrobeats sensation Qing Madi has sparked a massive conversation online after comparing the financial rewards of the music industry to "drug money."
Speaking on the latest episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, the 19-year-old singer, born Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, highlighted the staggering wealth gap between entertainers and average Nigerian workers.
Qing Madi explained that while a typical Nigerian professional might work a 9-5 for a monthly salary of ₦500,000, an artist can command as much as ₦20 million for a single performance.
Despite her financial success, the "Ole" crooner noted that she intentionally avoids flaunting her riches on social media.
“Music money is huge... I don’t think people know how [much]. I don’t want people looking at me and seeing money, but I am rich,” she admitted during the sit-down.
The singer also touched on the emotional connection Nigerians have with music, suggesting that because access to therapy is limited, many citizens turn to music as a primary tool for escapism and emotional release.
By choosing to stay grounded, Qing Madi hopes to be defined by her artistry rather than the "abnormal" wealth that comes with the industry.
