Actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has candidly revealed that her public endorsement of President Bola Tinubu during the last general election negatively impacted her career, advising fellow actor Timini Egbuson to steer clear of politics.
Abraham made the revelation while offering advice to Timini on strategies to boost his movie's box office performance.
During their conversation, she strongly cautioned against taking political positions publicly, drawing from her personal experience.
"The first advice I will give you in my entire life is, don't put your mouth in politics.
Don't tell them you're supporting anybody. Don't support anybody, just be on your own. Be neutral," Abraham advised.
When Timini brought up her past endorsement of Tinubu, Toyin Abraham brushed it off, saying "That was then."
She then acknowledged the significant backlash she faced, exclaiming "Haaaaaaa, it affected me oooo" as she revealed how it hurt her career prospects.
The actress faced intense criticism following her political stance, with some netizens vowing not to watch her films.
Her 2023 movie 'Malaika' allegedly suffered from piracy on WhatsApp, with some attributing the leak to backlash against her political position.
Toyin had previously lamented the poor reviews of "Malaika", stating, "You all will tell the world why choosing my own candidate is a crime and yours is not."
Her comments highlighted the double standards she perceived in how public figures are treated based on their political choices.
The revelation provides insight into the pressures Nigerian celebrities face when engaging in political discourse, particularly in a deeply polarized electoral environment.
Abraham's candid admission serves as a cautionary tale for fellow entertainers navigating the intersection of politics and entertainment.
Despite the challenges, Abraham has continued to work in Nollywood, maintaining her status as one of the industry's most bankable stars while now choosing to keep her political views private.
