Popular Afrobeats soul singer Chike has opened up about the strict marriage guidelines he received from his mother, sparking a conversation on the importance of financial stability in relationships.
During a recent appearance on the podcast Ada’s Room, the "Boo of the Booless" star revealed that his mother explicitly warned him against marrying a woman who does not have her own source of income.
Chike explained that his mother’s advice is rooted in the belief that a partner should bring tangible value to a marriage rather than becoming a financial burden.
According to the singer, he was also cautioned to be wary of marrying "firstborns" who carry heavy family responsibilities without having the personal productivity to manage them.
“Personally, my mum advised me never to settle down with a woman who doesn’t have a source of livelihood regardless of love. She also told me never to marry someone with the baggage of family responsibilities, especially a firstborn that is not productive,” Chike shared.
The singer admitted that he takes these words to heart, stating that he now asks potential partners "tough questions" about their career and family dynamics before getting serious.
He urged other men to look beyond physical beauty and prioritize financial independence and personal growth when choosing a life partner to avoid long-term marital pressure.
