Gunmen suspected to be cultists have beheaded the President of the Omoku Youth Federation in Rivers State, Ifeanyi Azuazu, and shot dead his personal aide, Chigozie Oluwu, in a brazen Thursday evening attack.
The incident occurred around 6 pm at a popular drinking spot along Ogolo Street, off Palace Road in Omoku town, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area.
Sources said about seven assailants arrived in two vehicles, confronted the Youth President, and ordered him into a car. His aide, Oluwu, attempted to intervene and was shot dead on the spot. The gunmen then abducted Azuazu.
The attack caused panic, with residents fleeing and businesses shutting down. A viral video showed local youths helping police place Oluwu's body into a patrol van.
On Friday afternoon, a local vigilante group, the ONELGA Security and Planning Advisory Committee (OSPAC), discovered Azuazu's headless body in the bush.
OSPAC's Public Relations Officer, Godnews Nkem, confirmed: “Chigozie was shot dead by the gunmen before they abducted Ifeanyi Azuazu. Based on intelligence reports... we recovered the lifeless and headless body of Ifeanyi Azuazu in the bush.”
The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, also confirmed the incident, describing it as cult-related. “Yes, I can confirm the incident. It was cult-related... Unfortunately, the headless body of the youth president was discovered today,” she stated.
She added that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.
OSPAC advised residents to remain calm and allow the police, DSS, and other security agencies to conduct their investigations.
