A UK-based Nigerian, Daniel Odubanjo, has been sentenced to six years in prison by the Chelmsford Crown Court for sexually assaulting a woman during a train journey. The British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the conviction for offences including false imprisonment and sexual assault.
According to a BTP statement, the incident occurred on November 29, 2024. The 21-year-old victim was using a train toilet when Odubanjo, 27, banged on the door. When she opened it, he forced himself inside, locked the door, and assaulted her. She managed to escape only after lying about her age, claiming to be 14.
Shortly after the first assault, Odubanjo approached a teenage girl on the same train, sat opposite her, and asked inappropriate questions. After he briefly left, the girl moved seats, but he returned and sexually assaulted her before a nearby passenger intervened.
Odubanjo was arrested by BTP officers at Hatfield Peverel station. Following an investigation, he was charged, found guilty after a trial, and sentenced on January 12. In addition to the prison term, he was handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
This case adds to a list of convictions involving Nigerians in the UK, highlighting ongoing legal issues within the diaspora community. The BTP commended the bravery of the victims in coming forward, which led to the successful prosecution.
