The fatal shooting of a Nigerian national by South African traffic police officers has sparked renewed outrage and concern over the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
A 37-year-old Nigerian man, Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu, was reportedly shot dead during an early morning traffic operation on the N12 highway in Klerksdorp, North West Province, South Africa. The incident occurred at about 3am on Wednesday, December 17, according to South African authorities.
Confirming the development, the North West Provincial Police announced the arrest of four traffic police officers, aged between 25 and 36, in connection with the killing. The officers were taken into custody after allegedly fleeing the scene following the shooting but were later tracked down by detectives.
According to a report published by Independent Online (IOL) and cited by Punch, police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh stated that the deceased was legally resident in South Africa at the time of the incident. She explained that the officers were conducting routine traffic operations when they allegedly pursued Onu.
“During the pursuit, the deceased was allegedly shot,” Myburgh said. “His vehicle was later discovered stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the N12.”
Police authorities said officers responding to the distress call arrived at the scene only to discover that the traffic officers involved had already left. Preliminary investigations led detectives to a location within Klerksdorp, where the suspects were traced and arrested.

The arrested officers are facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice. Their official firearms have been seized and sent for forensic ballistic analysis as part of ongoing investigations.
Reacting to the arrests, the North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Ryno Naidoo, welcomed the swift action taken by the detectives, describing it as a professional and timely response.
The four accused officers are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, December 18.
The killing adds to a troubling pattern of reported violent deaths involving Nigerians in South Africa. In July, two Nigerians identified as Austin and Ayo were shot dead by unknown gunmen in Durban, an incident that further strained diplomatic and community relations.
