The Nigeria Police Force has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, in Ebonyi State.
Popoola reportedly slumped while attending a management meeting at the Ebonyi State Police Command Headquarters in Abakaliki around 11am on Tuesday, according to police sources.
A senior police officer who spoke with Punch on condition of anonymity disclosed that the late ACP, who was the Officer in Charge of the State Intelligence Department, suddenly developed breathing difficulties during the meeting.
“He started gasping for air and was immediately rushed to the Police Medical Centre at the command headquarters,” the source said.

Medical personnel at the facility reportedly made efforts to resuscitate him, but he was later confirmed dead. Preliminary medical findings indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrest linked to hypertensive heart disease.
Following his death, Popoola’s remains were deposited at the morgue of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where further procedures are expected to be carried out.
Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, said the late officer was not ill prior to the meeting.
“Yes, one of them had a crisis during a meeting and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive,” Ukandu said during a telephone interview. “He was not sick before the incident. If he were sick, he wouldn’t have attended the meeting.”
Ukandu described the deceased as a dedicated and committed officer who served the Nigeria Police Force with professionalism and discipline.
The sudden death has drawn condolences from colleagues and members of the public, with many describing the incident as a reminder of the pressures faced by security personnel in active service.
