A New York father has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally stabbing his pregnant wife and attacking his two young daughters because he was enraged that she was carrying another girl.
According to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, Drew Garnier, 33, admitted to killing his five-months-pregnant wife, Samantha Garnier, 29, and stabbing their daughters, Izzie, 6, and Adelina, 9, in their Masonville home on September 4, 2024.
“He wanted a boy,” said Samantha’s father, Gregory Vernagallo, in a heartbreaking victim impact statement. The unborn baby also died in the attack, just weeks before Samantha’s 30th birthday.

Garnier pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and two counts of assault, avoiding a trial to spare his surviving daughters further trauma. “We secured this conviction without forcing the girls to testify,” said DA Shawn Smith.
The court imposed a 15-year post-release supervision and barred Garnier from contacting his daughters until 2056—unless they choose to reach out. The girls, who suffered significant injuries, were adopted by their grandfather.
“I am their father now. I will protect them,” Vernagallo declared at sentencing.
