The Lagos State Government has imposed penalties on 580 nightclubs and restaurants for violating indoor smoking laws in 2024. The crackdown is part of the state’s efforts to enforce public health safety and curb second-hand smoke exposure.
According to Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, the agency inspected 2,024 public places last year, with 580 establishments fined for allowing smoking in prohibited areas.
“Public smoking is not allowed, and there’s a bill already in place to prohibit it. People are only permitted to smoke in designated areas. If you see people smoking in buses or enclosed spaces, report them immediately. This is a serious public health matter,” Mojola stated during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Ikeja.

The commission launched an anti-indoor smoking campaign in 2024, urging citizens to report violations under the slogan: “See it. Say it. Sort it.” Mojola also addressed concerns about rogue consultants working with the agency, confirming that four had been sentenced for illegal activities.
Meanwhile, Commissioner for Special Duties Olugbenga Oyerinde highlighted the commission’s safety audits across construction sites, banks, and factories, reinforcing Lagos’ commitment to public safety.
